Autumn capsule wardrobe 2026: 30 pieces, colours and costs
An autumn 2026 capsule wardrobe: a piece list with materials and uses, the season's Pantone colours and a cost-per-wear calculation.
In this article6

An autumn capsule is a small, coordinated selection of around 30 garments that together cover October to December. For autumn 2026 that means warm materials such as wool, pieces that can be layered, and a colour palette in which almost everything combines. How to build a capsule in general, starting with a closet inventory, is covered in Building a Capsule Wardrobe: which pieces you really need. This guide is about the autumn selection itself: which pieces, which colours and what they cost per wear.
What are the must-haves for autumn 2026?
The must-haves for autumn 2026 are less about trend pieces than about items that cover most autumn days. They include a warm coat, a waterproof jacket, two or three wool jumpers, well-fitting dark trousers and shoes that can handle rain. Which of these you really need depends on your routine. Someone who cycles to the office every day sets different priorities from someone who mostly works from home.
The list below shows the core pieces of an autumn capsule with material and use. It is an editorial guide, not a shopping list: start with what is already in your wardrobe.
| Piece | Material | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Knee-length wool coat | wool or wool blend | cool days from about late October, office and weekend |
| Trench coat or rain jacket | coated cotton or membrane | rain and wind, over jumpers and blazers |
| Blazer | wool, wool blend or corduroy | office, dinner, as a layer under the coat |
| Light quilted jacket or down gilet | down or synthetic fill | in-between days, as a layer under the coat in December |
| Fine roll-neck jumper | merino wool | under a blazer or dress, warm without bulk |
| Chunky knit jumper | lambswool or cotton | weekends, cold evenings |
| Cardigan | wool or wool blend | indoors as a layer, over blouses and shirts |
| Dark jeans | cotton denim | almost any occasion except very formal ones |
| Straight-leg trousers | wool or wool blend | office, with a jumper or blazer |
| Midi skirt or knit dress | wool, corduroy or knit | with tights and boots into December |
| Chelsea boots or ankle boots | leather | rain, city, office |
| Everyday sneakers | leather or suede | dry days, weekends |
For the rain jacket, the hydrostatic head is worth a look; which values are enough for everyday use is explained in Hydrostatic head explained. Shoes follow their own criteria, set out in Everyday sneakers 2026: what matters in fit and materials and, once it turns frosty, in Winter boots that really keep you warm.
Wool is the key material of an autumn capsule, but it needs care. Jumpers in wool and blends form pills over time, which can be removed without damaging the fabric; Removing pilling shows how. If you plan a down jacket, the washing guide is at Washing a down jacket without the filling clumping.
What is the fashion colour for autumn 2026?
There is no single fashion colour for autumn 2026; the most quoted reference is Pantone's colour trend report for New York Fashion Week. In February 2026 Pantone presented ten colours for autumn/winter 2026/27 there, plus five core neutrals meant as a base across seasons.[1] According to FashionUnited, Pantone director Leatrice Eiseman describes shoppers looking for wearable, versatile colours that combine tradition and the new.
| Group | Pantone colours autumn/winter 2026/27 | Role in the capsule |
|---|---|---|
| Core neutrals | Egret (11-0103), Candied Ginger (15-1213), Toffee (18-1031), Underworld (17-4005), Poseidon (19-4033) | base for trousers, coats, knitwear |
| Earth tones | Muted Clay (16-1330), Arabian Spice (19-1245), Red Mahogany (19-1521), Burnt Olive (18-0521) | accent with a base character, such as a jumper or a skirt |
| Greens | Neptune Green (14-6017), Green Envy (16-0541) | one accent piece, for example a scarf or a blouse |
| Bold accents | Festival Fuchsia (19-2434), Foxglove (16-1710), Acacia (13-0640), All Aboard (17-4140) | one piece at most, ideally an accessory |
The grouping is Adtouro's editorial reading; the colours and numbers come from the Pantone report. For a capsule, the earth tones work best as a trend colour because they combine with white, brown and navy. The report describes Red Mahogany as a muted brown with a red undertone, so it suits almost any neutral base.
A simple rule helps you choose: a trend colour is worth it when it goes with at least three pieces you already own. A fuchsia jumper that matches only one pair of trousers is an outsider in a capsule.
Capsule wardrobe basics for autumn 2026
The basics of an autumn 2026 capsule wardrobe are around 30 pieces in five groups. The numbers are a guide; if your job calls for more formal clothes, plan more blouses and trousers, and if you spend a lot of time outdoors, a second jacket.
| Group | Number | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Tops | 12 | 4 long-sleeved tops, 2 blouses or shirts, 3 jumpers, 1 roll-neck, 1 cardigan, 1 sweatshirt |
| Bottoms and dresses | 7 | 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of tailored trousers, 1 pair of corduroy trousers, 1 midi skirt, 2 dresses |
| Jackets and coats | 4 | wool coat, rain jacket, blazer, quilted jacket |
| Shoes | 4 | ankle boots, sneakers, loafers, lined boots |
| Accessories | 3 | wool scarf, bag, hat and gloves as a set |
From 12 tops and 5 bottoms you get 60 combinations on paper, before dresses, jackets and shoes are added, provided the colours go together. That is why the colour palette comes before any purchase.

Cost per wear: a worked example
Cost per wear is the purchase price divided by the number of days you actually wear a piece. The example below rests on assumptions you should replace with your own:
| Wool coat | Trend jacket | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (assumption) | 300 euros | 80 euros |
| Wears per season (assumption) | 96 (24 weeks from October to March, 4 days a week) | 15 |
| Seasons in use (assumption) | 5 | 2 |
| Total wears | 480 | 30 |
| Cost per wear | about 0.63 euros | about 2.67 euros |
In this calculation the more expensive coat is more than four times cheaper per wear, because it is worn more often and for longer. Cleaning and repair costs are not included. Buying the coat second-hand, for example via Vinted or Kleinanzeigen, brings the figure down further.

Sustainable fashion in autumn 2026
Sustainable fashion in autumn 2026 mainly means buying less and wearing longer. Germany's Federal Environment Agency (UBA) advises wearing clothes as long as possible, having damage repaired and washing as often as necessary but as little as possible.[2] For new purchases the agency names labels such as GOTS, EU Ecolabel, Fairtrade and Oeko-Tex Made in Green as a guide. Clothing with an environmental label remained a niche all the same: according to the UBA, its market share in Germany was about 1.4 percent in 2020.[2]
Two figures show how large the lever is. According to the UBA, people in Germany spend an average of 78 euros a month on clothing and shoes, which corresponds to around 18 kilograms of clothing a year.[2] The European Environment Agency puts textile consumption in the EU in 2022 at 19 kilograms per person, of which 8 kilograms were clothing and 4 kilograms footwear.[3]
New in 2026 is a rule for retailers in the EU: since 19 July 2026, large companies may no longer destroy unsold clothing and footwear; for medium-sized companies the ban applies from 19 July 2030, and small companies are exempt.[4] For your own capsule this changes little; what you sort out and is still wearable can be passed on or go into a clothing donation bin.
Capsule wardrobe for autumn 2025
A capsule wardrobe from autumn 2025 can largely be worn on in 2026, because the colour direction has hardly changed. Pantone's palette for autumn/winter 2025 focused on browns such as Hot Chocolate and Bronze Brown, on reds such as Chili Oil and Poppy Red and on the deep blue Lyons Blue. Its core neutrals were Bright White, French Roast, Vapor Blue, Crown Blue and Mauve Wine.[5]
| Colour family | Autumn/winter 2025 | Autumn/winter 2026/27 |
|---|---|---|
| Brown | Hot Chocolate, Bronze Brown, French Roast | Toffee, Red Mahogany, Arabian Spice |
| White | Bright White | Egret |
| Navy | Lyons Blue, Crown Blue | Poseidon, All Aboard |
| Red and berry | Chili Oil, Poppy Red, Winterberry, Damson | Festival Fuchsia, Foxglove |
| Green and yellow | Lemon Grass | Burnt Olive, Green Envy, Neptune Green, Acacia |
The assignment to colour families is Adtouro's reading of the Pantone names. Brown, white and navy run through both years, so a brown jumper or a navy coat from last year stays part of the base. What is new in 2026 is mainly green and olive shades. If you want to add something, that is the most obvious extension.
Checklist for your autumn capsule
Check your own wardrobe with this checklist before you buy anything new:
- Do you have a warm coat and a jacket that can handle rain?
- Are there at least two jumpers in wool or a wool blend that go with your trousers?
- Does every top go with at least three bottoms?
- Are you sticking to two or three base colours and no more than two accent colours?
- Can your shoes cope with wet weather?
- Which pieces from autumn 2025 did you actually wear last year?
- Would a new piece reach at least 30 wears?
If you can answer yes to most of these, your autumn capsule is already complete; add pieces only where an answer is no.
Frequently asked questions
How many pieces does an autumn capsule wardrobe need?
Around 30 pieces are enough for most routines, not counting underwear, sportswear and nightwear. If you work in a formal setting or travel a lot, you can go up to 40 pieces.
Can I carry summer pieces into the autumn capsule?
Yes, especially long-sleeved tops, blouses and light trousers work as a base layer under jumpers and blazers. Shorter skirts and dresses often carry on into November with opaque tights and boots.
Which materials suit autumn?
Wool and wool blends for jumpers, trousers and coats, cotton denim and corduroy for bottoms, and leather for shoes. For a rain jacket, a waterproof coating or membrane matters more than the outer fabric.
Do I need to buy new pieces for an autumn capsule?
No. Most pieces are usually already in your wardrobe; buying new is only worth it where the checklist shows a gap, such as a missing rain jacket.
