What size can my carry-on be in 2026?
With most major airlines in 2026, your carry-on can measure 55 × 40 × 23 cm and weigh 8 kg. Lufthansa[1], Eurowings[2], Condor[3], SunExpress[4], Turkish Airlines[5] and Pegasus[6] all state this limit for the large carry-on. Wizz Air uses the same size for the trolley with WIZZ Priority, but allows 10 kg.[7]

Three groups differ. KLM[8] and Air France[9] allow 55 × 35 × 25 cm, which is 5 cm narrower but 2 cm deeper. British Airways states 56 × 45 × 25 cm[10], and easyJet also gives 56 × 45 × 25 cm for the booked large cabin bag.[11] Ryanair allows 55 × 40 × 20 cm at 10 kg with "Priority & 2 Cabin Bags".[12]
Almost everywhere, the large item comes with a small bag that has to fit under the seat in front. Its size varies more: from 40 × 30 × 15 cm at Lufthansa, Condor or Turkish Airlines, through 40 × 30 × 25 cm at Eurowings, up to 45 × 36 × 20 cm at easyJet[11]. All values in this article were checked on the airlines' own pages on 29 October 2026; how the editors work is described in Adtouro's methodology.
How big can carry-on luggage be in 2026?
How big your carry-on can be in 2026 depends less on the airline than on the fare you booked. The 55 × 40 × 23 cm size only applies if your ticket includes a large carry-on. In the cheapest fares of many airlines, only the personal item is included and the large bag costs extra.
| Airline | Budget fare | Included in the budget fare |
|---|---|---|
| Lufthansa | Economy Basic (short and medium haul) | personal item up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm |
| Eurowings | BASIC | small bag up to 40 × 30 × 25 cm |
| Condor | Economy Zero | small bag up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm, large bag can be added |
| KLM | Economy with Basic ticket | small bag up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm |
| Ryanair | Basic | small bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm |
| easyJet | Standard | small cabin bag up to 45 × 36 × 20 cm |
| Wizz Air | Basic | cabin bag up to 40 × 30 × 20 cm |
The table is based on what Lufthansa states for Economy Basic[13], Condor for Economy Zero and KLM for the Basic ticket. At Condor, the small bag up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm is included in every fare.
Bags are measured on the outside, including everything that sticks out. easyJet explicitly says "including handles and wheels", as does KLM, and Air France also counts outside pockets. A suitcase labelled "55 × 40 × 20 cm" can therefore end up over the limit once wheels and handle are included. Measure your packed case yourself before you leave for the airport.
Is Turkish Airlines strict about carry-on luggage?
In Economy, Turkish Airlines allows one carry-on of up to 23 × 40 × 55 cm and 8 kg[5] and spells out exactly what happens to a bag that is too big. On top of that comes a personal item of up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm and 4 kg. In Business Class, the allowance is two carry-ons of 8 kg each.
Turkish Airlines does not publish how often bags are measured at the gate. What it does set out clearly is what happens if a bag does not meet the rules: a fee is charged at the gate and the bag travels in the hold. If there is no room left there, it arrives on the next available flight. On full flights, staff may also ask you to check in your carry-on as early as check-in.[5]
For your planning, this means: if you stay within the 8 kg and pack valuables and medication in your personal item, you are on the safe side even if your bag is taken at check-in.
What size can my carry-on be on Pegasus?
On Pegasus international flights, your carry-on can measure 55 × 40 × 23 cm and weigh 8 kg if you booked it as part of a package or separately. Without that booking, international routes and flights to Cyprus only allow one item that fits under the seat: no more than 40 × 30 × 15 cm and 3 kg.[6] For domestic flights within Turkey, Pegasus states one carry-on of up to 55 × 40 × 23 cm.
With Pegasus, watch the depth. Some Pegasus pages, such as the contact page on boarding, still gave 55 × 40 × 20 cm on 29 October 2026. To be sure, choose a case no deeper than 20 cm and check the package in your own booking before you fly.
How big can carry-on luggage be on Turkish airlines?
The Turkish airlines Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and SunExpress all apply the same limit to the large carry-on: 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg. The differences lie in the small item and in what the fare includes.
| Airline | Large carry-on | Small item | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turkish Airlines | 55 × 40 × 23 cm, 8 kg | 40 × 30 × 15 cm, 4 kg | both included in Economy |
| Pegasus | 55 × 40 × 23 cm, 8 kg | 40 × 30 × 15 cm, 3 kg | large bag only with a package or as an add-on |
| SunExpress | 55 × 40 × 23 cm, 8 kg | 40 × 30 × 20 cm, 4 kg | SunLight fare: small item only |
In the SunLight fare, SunExpress only includes one bag under the seat in front, weighing up to 4 kg.[4] SunExpress checks compliance at boarding.
What is a standard carry-on size?
A standard carry-on is a trolley of 55 × 40 × 23 cm weighing up to 8 kg, plus a small bag of about 40 × 30 × 15 cm. "Standard" is not a term from any official norm, though. There is no single size: every airline in this overview sets its own dimensions, as the different values show.
If you want one case for every airline, work with the smallest size they all accept. Based on what the 13 airlines in this overview state, the editors' own calculation gives:
- Large carry-on: no more than 55 cm high, 35 cm wide and 20 cm deep, 8 kg at most. The 35 cm width comes from KLM and Air France, the 20 cm depth from Ryanair.
- Small bag: no more than 40 × 30 × 15 cm. Lufthansa, Condor, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, KLM, Air France and British Airways accept this size; the others allow more.
- Weight: 8 kg for the large item. KLM and Air France count the extra item as well and allow 12 kg combined.

A case like this is narrower than most cabin trolleys on sale. Whether the compromise is worth it depends on how often you fly with KLM or Air France. If you mainly travel with Lufthansa, Eurowings or Condor, 55 × 40 × 23 cm will do. On long-haul trips, like the ones Adtouro's guide to a budget for a trip to Japan works through, it pays to look at the route: partner airlines with their own rules often fly those legs.

The values come from the airlines' own pages:
- Lufthansa: carry-on baggage and Economy Basic.[1]
- Eurowings: carry-on baggage per fare.[2]
- Condor: new sizes since 1 May 2026, previously 55 × 40 × 20 cm and 40 × 30 × 10 cm.[3]
- TUI fly: the FAQ gives 10 kg and priority boarding for the large carry-on, but no general dimensions. TUI fly only states 55 × 40 × 20 cm for a large carry-on with a buggy or child seat; the exact allowance is in your booking confirmation.[14]
- Ryanair: Article 8 of the General Terms and Conditions of Carriage.[12]
- easyJet: small cabin bag up to 15 kg, large one only if booked.[11]
- Wizz Air: fares and bundles.[7]
- KLM: carry-on and small bag up to 12 kg combined.[8]
- Air France: 12 kg combined in Economy, 18 kg in Premium, Business and La Première.[9]
- British Airways: one cabin bag plus a handbag or backpack.[10]
Airlines change their rules, as Condor showed in May 2026. So check the dimensions before every flight on the page of the airline you booked with, and compare them with your fare. You will find more planning help in the Travel section, for example destinations for December.
Frequently asked questions
Do wheels and handles count towards carry-on size?
Yes. easyJet and KLM explicitly include handles and wheels, and Air France also counts outside pockets. So measure your packed case at its outermost points.
Can I take a handbag in addition to my trolley?
With most airlines, yes, as a small bag or personal item under the seat in front. At KLM and Air France it counts towards the combined weight of 12 kg.
What happens if my carry-on is too big?
The bag is usually sent to the hold, often for a fee at the gate. Turkish Airlines names this consequence explicitly; each airline sets the amount and the procedure itself.
Do Lufthansa and Eurowings use the same carry-on size?
Yes, both allow 55 × 40 × 23 cm and 8 kg. The difference is the small bag: Eurowings allows 40 × 30 × 25 cm, Lufthansa 40 × 30 × 15 cm.
